help you to
clear old traumas, habits, phobias, unconscious blocks and other limiting beliefs; helping you to become
more confident, relaxed and feel more positively empowered about your life.
Do you Struggle to Change Certain Behaviours?
Do you ever feel like you know what you want to do and how you'd like to behave and yet feel like
some part of you is resisting the change you want to make? This is often due to your unconscious
programming, beliefs you've adopted that became an ingrained habit, beliefs that you may not even be
fully aware of. Willpower and logic on its own is not always enough to allow us to make the change we'd
like to make and sometimes you may need extra help at an unconscious level, the level that drives most of
your behaviour.
What is Hypnotherapy?
Your mind has a conscious and an unconscious. You're reading this
with your conscious mind wondering what this means to you, while your unconscious mind is keeping you
balanced in your chair and is looking after your breathing and things that you aren't fully aware
of... until I mention them to you.
For the most part this is useful, however, your unconscious also has some unresourceful habits and
behaviours. Hypnotherapy can help by speaking to the unconscious part of you to form new preferred
thoughts, responses, attitudes and behaviours and/or feelings. A trained, supportive practitioner can
help you to quiet the conscious mind so you can request healthier, preferred behaviours instead.
What is NLP?
NLP is short for Neuro-Linguistic Programming, it's basically a tool set of techniques that can be used
by a practitioner to help resolve personal issues with your existing habitual thought processes and can also
be used to model success. NLP is closely aligned with hypnotherapy as it works with positive change at an
unconscious level.
Richard Bandler and John Grinder co-created the tool set of NLP by studying other successful therapists and by
asking better questions; rather than ask people why they think they had a phobia for example, they asked
people to come forward who had rid themselves of these limiting behaviours and share with them what they
actually did. They then took the commonalities of these findings and made these into working resolution
options. These options are then used by NLP practitioners to assist their clients.
There is a lot of discussion about NLP & Hypnotherapy on the internet, but like massage, reiki, acupuncture or
even exercise, it's something that you have to experience yourself to understand how profoundly beneficial it can
be. I would encourage you to experience this for yourself. You'll be glad you did.
The drawing below is an iceberg analogy I use to explain unconscious behaviours in a straightforward
way. I discuss the topic in greater detail on my courses so that people can become "conscious of their
unconscious".

Your Unconscious Mind
It's said that our unconscious thoughts control around 88% of our day to day behaviour, if this
is true, then much of our lives are on auto pilot. This is why you can do everything from
brushing your teeth to driving a car without giving it much thought.
If we had to stop and think about every single process we would get overwhelmed.
As well as storing these useful 'routines' our unconscious mind also works to keep us safe, each
unconscious behaviour has a positive intention, even though some of these behaviours can be appear
to be inappropriate, unhealthy or downright silly; often taken on by comments or beliefs we heard when we
were younger or as a knee jerk reaction to incidents in our lives that had high emotional
content.
It's useful to know that there are ways to potentially overcome unwanted behaviours by finding a new
better way to fulfil the original positive intention (which is often to keep us safe) with a hypnotherapy/NLP
session.
How I Helped Someone to Overcome a Very Unusual
Phobia
I was on holiday in sunny Tenerife recently and our tour rep said "Lester, you'll probably
laugh because I have the stupidest fear ever! I'm afraid of... pasta!". I smiled supportively but
didn't laugh, as I know, no matter how bizarre it may sound, fears can seem very real for
people. She said she felt queasy if she went anywhere near the stuff, she tensed up right
there just thinking about it! (this may sound quite ridiculous, but consider this, a fear
you may have may seem just as irrational to someone else who doesn't experience
it).
Living in a country where pasta is a daily staple this greatly complicated her life and when she tried to explain
this challenge to others she just felt embarrassed and stupid as she knew, at some level it didn't
make any sense, but she just couldn't stop "the feeling", it was just always "there". Imagine not being
able to sit next to someone and having to leave the restaurant because they'd ordered pasta...
She said she had felt this way since she was very young but had no idea what caused it. People
suggested she may have choked on pasta when she was young, most just made fun of her and told
her not to be so damn silly, none of which helped her at all.
She was getting picked up by a car in 15 minutes, so there was no time to lose. I offered
to help her there and then. Astonished at the possibility, she said "Yes please, I'll try
anything!".
Using some hypnotherapy
techniques I opened a dialogue with the unconscious part of her and asked some simple
Yes/No questions.
"Is this fear of pasta
protecting her in some way?" - I got a Yes response from her unconscious mind and she got briefly
tearful at how profound that moment was, that her unconscious was speaking..., I told her this was a
pefectly normal reaction and she relaxed again. I continued my conversation with her
unconscious...
"Was this
fear caused by a choking incident when she was young?" - No
"Has she always had this
fear?" - No (which suggested she was at one time fine with pasta)
"Did some emotional or
frightening event occur while she was around pasta at an early age?" - Yes
(An image of her parents arguing while she was a
child in a high chair flashed into my mind, so I went with
it)
"An event such as her
parents having an argument and shouting at her to eat her pasta?" - Yes
"Is she older and wiser
and much more capable of making her own choices now than she was then?" - Yes
"Can we start
to identify some more positive
behaviours for her?" - Yes
We made the
necessary adjustments, then her car arrived and looking completely stunned by how
different she felt when I asked her about pasta, she gave me a hug and went away with a huge
smile.
The next day she told me, that
night she happily ate pasta for the first time in 17 years and totally loved it! The best part was that she
felt totally liberated and "normal" for the first time in her adult life, so
if you or anyone you know has an usual phobia, anxiety or
limiting behaviour, use the form below to enquire about a
session now and you could be clear of it by this time next week.
